Society of American Travel Writers (SATW) Annual Convention
|
Date: |
18 - 23 October 2006 |
Location: |
Santiago Chile |
Details: |
The world's largest annual gathering of professional travel journalists will be held in Santiago, Chile, Oct. 18-23, 2006 when the Society of American Travel Writers (SATW) gathers for its 51st annual convention.
With more than 1,200 travel writers, photographers, broadcasters and associate members, SATW is the largest travel journalist organization on the planet. Approximately 500 SATW members are expected to attend the meeting in Chile.
'When selecting a destination for our annual meeting, we look for a site that offers dozens of travel story ideas so that each of our writers and photographers can come back with different material, explains Ed Malone, SATW president. 'Chile certainly fits that bill. It is one of the fastest growing travel destinations in South America and yet the American public still knows very little about it.'
The actual convention lasts four days and consists of professional development sessions, business meetings and story gathering opportunities in Chile's capital and largest city, Santiago. Before and after the convention, up to two dozen pre- and post-trips are offered, allowing small groups of travel writers to experience every aspect of the country with the intention of producing newspaper and magazine articles as well as shooting photography that appears all over the world.
In Chile, SATW members will have an opportunity to visit, write about and photograph:
Chile's Central Coast, known as the country's summer playground for its wide beaches, charming fishing villages, vineyards, seafood restaurants and fashionable beach resorts;
Chile's Central Valley, where writers will visit the Hacienda Los Lingues, an exquisite and historic 17th century hacienda and a member of Relais and Chateaux Hotels.
The Colchagua Valley, a lush valley south of Santiago that is a focal point for picturesque colonial towns and the gateway to many of Chile's most famous vineyards;
La Serena, a northern Chile city-resort with 29 churches dating from the 17th Century, as well as offering a variety of soft-adventure day trips into the nearby Andes mountains;
The Atacama Desert, the world's driest desert, which is dotted with soaring volcanoes, geysers and moon-like landscapes, all bordered by the Pacific Ocean;
The Lake District, a spectacular region with breathtaking scenery, blue and green lakes, rushing waterfalls, Alpine-style villages and beautiful national parks;
Patagonia, a region of dense forests, snowcapped peaks, brilliant lakes, glaciers and fjords, where writers will stay in deluxe lodges with spas or in comfortable eco-camps in Torres del Paine National Park;
Easter Island, the world famous site also known as Rapa Nui with its giant moais (sculptures) and petroglyphs that recall an ancient culture; and Robinson Crusoe Island, the World Biosphere Reserve with island caves, sea lions, fascinating flora and fauna and the Santa Barbara Fortress.
'We believe Chile is one of the world's great travel destinations - and most of it is undiscovered to Americans. By having our national convention there, we will generate dozens of newspaper and magazine travel articles, thousands of photo images and a variety of radio and television travel shows that will bring the wonders of Chile to American readers and viewers,' Malone said.
In the past, SATW has met in such exotic locals as Thailand, Israel, Australia, India, Switzerland, Wales and Bermuda. Closer to home, it has met in Las Vegas, Orlando, Banff, Canada, and Hawaii. This will be its second meeting in South America; it met in Ecuador in 1995.
