Career Change : Everything You Need to Know to Meet New Challenges and Take Cont

Better than most books on Career Change
Reviewer: A reader from Liverpool, NY USA The book starts out with 2 surveys. One survey assesses you and your work environment. You get to pinpoint, in quantitative terms, what works for you & what doesn't. The other assessment surveys your entrepreneurial skills, and whether starting your own business is for you. Armed with that information, the book launches into presenting all sorts of options, and references for following up, on whatever peaks your interest. The options approach in this book is a welcome change from the 'do it this way' format of some career books. A unique section on adult development points out how women's life goals at different stages, are often different than a man's life goals at the same stage. At last, it is in print, what we knew all along. This book also gives ways to overcome common problems. This is a welcome change from other books, whose motto is 'just do it'. Sometimes getting off the starting block is the real problem. This book has frank talk in that category, to get you going, and ease you into the process comfortably. If you need a gentle push, try this book.

Discover What You're Best At

Excellent resource for career direction
Reviewer: [email protected] from Grove City, PA, USA
This book is excellent not only for those who are changing careers but also for those beginning college and unsure of what area to study. For example, I took these tests as a senior in high school. The results reaffirmed my choice of major and provided a wide range of choices for career paths that I would be good at. My lowest score occurred in an area I did not like and did not feel I was good at. At the back of the book an excellent career directory provides detailed descriptions of all the career choices. The directory is very comprehensive and informative. This book is an excellent resource for guidance and career counselors. The only areas it cannot test are special skill areas such as music and art, but for everything else it is great. An emphasis on skills, and not changing interests, provides the books main strength.

Jobs Rated Almanac
More information Than Anywhere
Reviewer: Robert Matson from California
Since I have a number of career books in my personal library, I can attest to this as being the book that is most likely to have information you can't find elsewhere, even though some might not be useful to all. For example, the book has information on some not-so hot jobs, like barber, or plumber but it also has some of newer high tech jobs, as ell as traditional professions (I.e. attorneys, financial planers etc) Krantz has amassed information on the whole occupational universe, including the hardest to find. He has not just salaries, but what you can expect to earn if you are very successful in each of the 250 jobs the book profiles. The book also addresses important but overlooked aspects of each job and has a whole chapter about the various stress components of each job. Unlike other job guides, this one even informs you what kinds of companies, coworkers and peers you are likely to have fun you choose a particular occupation. One of the things I like best is the book's organization, which allows you to compare every job aspect, from salaries to weekly hours worked with all the other jobs in the book.

Promoting Yourself

Good reference guide!
Reviewer: Andrew K. Johnson from Flat Rock, MI United States
Use this book as a sort of guidance counselor. Mr. Lancaster wrote the short easy-to-read chapters much like a career journal column in the Wall Street Journal.
All of the chapters won't apply to everyone, but Lancaster does a good job of moving along the topic with good specific examples.
A quick read that will stay on my referral shelf. All topics covered should apply now and in the future to all of us out there with difficult jobs, bosses and decisions to be made. Good stuff!
